Since their launch Interwoven has risen to be one of the largest, market leading players in the CMS space.  Their light weight, user focused, rapid deployments enabled them to outpace a number of the original competitors like Documentum and Vingette.  As the space evoled toward Web Content Management Systems (WMS), however, they lost their innovator status to a host of startup me too product.  In particular, open source offerings like Drupal really started to threaten their positioning.  Ultimately, content is about the consumer, and delivering timely, personalized messages and that is something Interwoven never mastered.

Listrak is an innovative, smaller firm that has built on a solid vision for where the digital campaign / email space is moving.  One very nice innovation is the inclusion of a SOA (specifically web) that really opens up their content repository for dynamic matching on content.

Saepio offers a very compelling story around the integrated processes needed for the digital marketing organization.  Visually, they offer a great info diagram (below) that attempts to chunk out the discreet functions:

While they have a beautiful vision, right now their execution ability is largely focused on print. There are some significant assets here, though, that a pure digital play could really capitalize upon.

Endeca

Loosely speaking Endeca can be grouped with the MDMs because their underlying data engine is an MDM solution.  From that point, however, Endeca goes in a very specific direction, focusing their attention on down stream business value of an MDM solution.  In their case, they have chosen to focus on organic, intuitive information retrieval.  This could potentially have marketing impact, but really strays more toward the E2 vendor space.
